The typical operating voltage of an automotive electrical system is 12 volts. This standard has been widely adopted in most vehicles, especially since the introduction of the modern automobile system. The 12-volt electrical system allows for efficient operation of various components, including the starter motor, lighting, ignition systems, and electronic control units.

This voltage level strikes a balance between adequate power delivery for starting the engine and running auxiliary parts while remaining safe and manageable for electrical components and wiring. Although some heavier vehicles or specialized equipment may utilize 24-volt systems for their increased power needs, the 12-volt system remains the most common in standard passenger vehicles.

The other voltage levels mentioned are not typical for mainstream automotive applications. For instance, 6 volts was more common in older vehicles but has largely been phased out. While 48-volt systems are emerging in hybrid and electric vehicles to power specific functions, they are not representative of typical, conventional automotive electrical systems.
